"This may be the loneliest album of the year. So lonely, in fact, that Seattle's Death Cab for Cutie has coined a new word for it: Transatlanticism, that feeling you get when you're an emotional ocean apart from someone. On DCfC's fourth full-length, Ben Gibbard's lyrics are wistful metaphors for the nautical miles between two hearts: 'The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row/It seems farther than ever before,' he sings on the album's title track. An abstract concept, for sure, but Gibbard's genius is his focus on life's smallest details as metaphor. It's pictures in a glove compartment that lead to a flood of memories about an ex; it's the broken blood vessels in a love bite that slowly fade, lasting longer than the one-night stand they're from. Chris Walla's guitars and keyboards are gorgeous and mournful and then they're gone, leaving gaps of sound that deepen the album's isolation." (Playboy)
Melodic, melancholy songs about feeling both smart and confused, hopelessly romantic but wary of love. (3.5 stars)
